Our collective consciousness clings to the myth of the underdog — the resilient outsider who, against all odds, finds success. It’s the story of the everyman who wins if they try hard enough. This narrative runs the gamut from the inspiring rise of Rocky Balboa in “Rocky” to the bizarre journey of Napoleon Dynamite in “Napoleon Dynamite.” It can be found at every level of society and has been a Hollywood cash cow, captivating our imagination and dollars. This narrative has worked through the ages too, from the Bible’s David versus Goliath story to today’s rags-to-riches tech entrepreneur tales like Steve Jobs. But is this cherished story, in fact, a carefully constructed illusion? Is this comforting tale not one of inspiration but rather one of exploitation?

The modern underdog story, as celebrated in our culture, is not one of true rebellion or transformation. Instead, it’s a narrative of forced assimilation, a fairy tale of the outsider finally gaining acceptance by conforming to the very system that once rejected them. We applaud when the misfit finds their place, but we fail to question whether that place is truly worthy of them.

Consider the typical trajectory: a brilliant but unconventional individual struggles against societal norms, faces rejection, near-constant devaluation, and hardship, only to eventually be “discovered” and validated by the established…
