When Will Society Collapse?
The breaking point for a society focused on immediate gratification and short-term gains — at the expense of long-term planning — depends on how severe and interconnected existing crises become. Historically, systems that prioritize short-term benefits eventually collapse when their underlying contradictions and unsustainable practices overwhelm their capacity to function. In today’s world, several key dynamics signal potential points of failure:
1. Environmental Collapse as the Tipping Point
The most immediate and existential threat to a “now-focused” society is environmental degradation. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion are accelerating at a pace that makes short-term thinking untenable.
When Will This Break Society?
- Mid-Century: By 2040–2050, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and resource scarcity (e.g., water and food) could overwhelm global infrastructure. Cities and countries unprepared for climate migration or disasters will face significant societal breakdowns.
- Critical systems, such as agriculture, energy grids, and urban planning, will be unable to adapt quickly enough, leading to widespread displacement and conflict over resources.
